വര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് മുമ്പ് ഒരു വൃദ്ധദമ്പതിക ൾ   അമേരിക്കയിലെ   പ്രശസ്തമായ ഹാർവാർഡ്  യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റിയിലേക്ക് കയറിച്ചെന്നു.

"ഞങ്ങൾക്ക്  പ്രസിഡണ്ടിനെ ഒന്ന് കാ ണണം" അവർ റിസപ്ഷനിസ്റ്റിനോട് പറഞ്ഞു. 

"കുറച്ചു  നേരം  ഇരിക്കൂ,  ഞാൻ വിളി ക്കാം അദ്ദേഹം തിരക്കിലാണ്." 

റിസപ്ഷനിസ്റ്റിന്റെ  മറുപടി  കേട്ട്  മണി ക്കൂറുകൾ കാത്തിരുന്നിട്ടും കാര്യമുണ്ടാ യില്ല. കുറച്ചു നേരം ഇരുന്നു മടുത്താൽ താനെ ഒഴിഞ്ഞു പോകും എന്നാണ് റി സെപ്ഷനിസ്റ് കരുതിയത്.എന്നാൽ ദമ്പതികൾ വളരെ ക്ഷമയോടെ  കാ ത്തിരുന്നു. 

ഒടുവിൽ ഗത്യന്തരമില്ലാതെ അവരെ പ്രസിഡണ്ടിന്റെ മുറിയിലേക്ക് കയറാൻ അനുവദിച്ചു. 

"ഞങ്ങളുടെ മകൻ ഈ യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി യിലെ ഒരു പൂർവ വിദ്യാർത്ഥിയായിരു ന്നു. കഴിഞ്ഞ വർഷം അവൻ ഒരു അപകടത്തിൽ മരണപ്പെട്ടു. മകന്റെ ഓർമക്കായി ഇവിടെ ഒരു സ്മാരകം നിർമ്മിക്കാൻ ഞങ്ങൾ  ആഗ്രഹിക്കു ന്നു".

പ്രസിഡന്റിന് അത്ഭുതം  തോന്നി.   "ഈ യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റിയിൽ പഠിച്ചു മരണപ്പെട്ട എല്ലാവർക്കും ഓർമകുടീരങ്ങൾ നിർമി ച്ചാൽ ഇവിടെ ഒരു സെമിത്തേരിയായി മാറും."പ്രസിഡന്റിന്റെ വാക്കുകൾ കേട്ട് ദമ്പതികൾ നിരാശരായി.

"ഞങ്ങൾ മകന് വേണ്ടി പ്രതിമയല്ല,   പക്ഷെ ഹാർവാർഡിനു വേണ്ടി ഒരു കെട്ടിടം തന്നെ നിർമിച്ചു തരാം." 

പ്രസിഡണ്ട്‌ അവരുടെ തുന്നിയുണ്ടാക്കി യ മേൽവസ്ത്രത്തിലൂടെ ഒന്ന്  കണ്ണോ ടിച്ചു. എന്നിട്ട് അല്പം പുച്ഛത്തോടെ പ റഞ്ഞു. "ഹാർവാർഡിന്റെ കെട്ടിടങ്ങ ൾക്ക് വരുന്ന വിലയെന്താണെന്നു നിങ്ങൾക്കറിയുമോ? ഏഴര മില്യൺ ഡോളർ !!!." 

പ്രസിഡന്റിന്റെ സംസാരം കേട്ട് ദമ്പതി കൾ നിശ്ശബ്ദരായി.അവർ ഇരിപ്പിട ത്തിൽ നിന്നെഴുന്നേറ്റു.സമയ നഷ്ടം ഒഴിഞ്ഞതിൽ പ്രസിഡന്റും സന്തോഷി ച്ചു. 

ഹാർവാർഡിന്റെ റിസപ്ഷൻ കടന്നു പുറത്തിറങ്ങിയ ആ വൃദ്ധ ദമ്പതികൾ പരസ്പരം സന്തോഷത്തോടെ ചോദി ക്കുകയായിരുന്നു.  'ഹാർവാർഡിന്റെ കെട്ടിടങ്ങൾക്ക് ഏഴര മില്യൺ ഡോളർ മാത്രമാണ് വിലയെങ്കിൽ നമുക്കെന്തു കൊണ്ട് സ്വന്തമായൊരു യൂണിവേഴ്സി റ്റി തന്നെ നിർമ്മിച്ചുകൂടാ?'  

ലാലന്റ് സ്റ്റാൻഫോർഡ് ദമ്പതികൾ ഹാർവാർഡിന് വേണ്ടാതിരുന്ന തന്റെ മകന് വേണ്ടി കാലിഫോർണിയയിൽ മറ്റൊരു യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി പണിതുയർ ത്തി.അമേരിക്കയിലെ പ്രശസ്തമായ സ്റ്റാൻഫോർഡ് യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി.
