വൈദ്യുത വിളക്കിന്റെ ഫിലമെന്റ്റിന് അനുയോജ്യമായ പദാര്‍ഥം കണ്ടെത്താ ന്‍ തോമസ് ആല്‍വാ എഡിസന്‍ രണ്ടാ യിരത്തോളം പദാര്‍ഥങ്ങള്‍ കൊണ്ട് പരീക്ഷണങ്ങള്‍ നടത്തി. പരാജയമായി രുന്നു ഫലം. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ഒന്നും കണ്ടെത്താനായില്ല.

എഡിസനെ പരീക്ഷണങ്ങില്‍ സഹായി ച്ചിരുന്ന സുഹൃത്ത് അദ്ദേഹത്തോട് ചോദിച്ചു, “നാം ഇതുവരെ ചെയ്തതെ ല്ലാം വെറുതെയായിപ്പോയില്ലേ”?. പക്ഷേ അതിന് എഡിസന്റെ മറു ചോദ്യം ഇതായിരുന്നു.

“ഈ രണ്ടായിരത്തോളം പദാര്‍ഥങ്ങള്‍ വൈദ്യുത വിളക്കിന്റെ ഫിലമെന്റിന് അനുയോജ്യമല്ല എന്നു നാം കണ്ടെത്തി ക്കഴിഞ്ഞില്ലേ?”.
